Salt Lake City contains only two buildings of note, the chief being the Tabernacle, which is in the shape of a soup-kettle. It is decorated by the only native artist, and he has treated religious subjects in the naive spirit of the early Florentine painters, representing people of our own day in the dress of the period {{1}} (rinnakkain) with people of Biblical history who {{2}} (clothe) in some romantic costume.
The building next in importance is called the Amelia Palace, in honour of one of {{3}} (Brigham Youngin vaimoista). When he died the present president of the Mormons stood up in the Tabernacle and said that it had been revealed to him that he was to have the Amelia Palace, and that on this subject there were to be no more revelations of any kind!
From Salt Lake City one travels over the great plains of Colorado and up {{4}} (Kalliovuoret), on the top of which is Leadville, the richest city in the world. It has also got the reputation of being the roughest, and every man carries a revolver. I {{5}} (tell) that if I went there they would be sure to shoot me or my travelling manager. I wrote and told them that nothing that they could do to my travelling manager would intimidate me. They are miners—men working in metals, so I lectured to them {{6}} (prepositio) the Ethics of Art. I read them passages from the autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini and they seemed much delighted. I was reproved by my hearers for not {{7}} (bring) him with me. I explained that he had been dead for some little time which elicited the enquiry “Who shot him”? They afterwards took me to a dancing saloon where I saw the only rational method of art criticism I have ever come {{8}} (prepositio). Over the piano was printed a notice:
> PLEASE DO NOT SHOOT THE PIANIST. HE IS DOING HIS BEST.
The mortality among pianists in that place is marvellous. Then they asked me to supper, and having accepted, I had to descend a mine in a rickety bucket in {{9}} (pronomini) it was impossible to be graceful. Having got into the heart of the mountain I had supper, the first course being whisky, the second whisky and the third whisky.
I went to the Theatre to lecture and I was informed that just before I went there two men {{10}} (seize) for committing a murder, and in that theatre they had been brought on to the stage at eight o’clock in the evening, and then and there tried and executed before a crowded audience. But I found these miners very charming and not at all rough.

Förklaring
1. Vihje rinnakkain kuvaa, miten maalauksen henkilöt ovat suhteessa toisiinsa. Luontevin vastine on vakiintunut adverbiaali side by side, ja sitä seuraa tässä with: side by side with people of Biblical history. YTL hyväksyi myös muun muassa ilmaukset next to each other, shoulder to shoulder, together ja along.
2. Henkilöt eivät itse pukeudu, vaan heidät on puettu, joten tarvitaan passiivi: be + III muoto clothed. Kappale kuvaa maalausta preesensissä (is decorated, has treated), joten are clothed sopii luontevimmin. YTL hyväksyi myös muodot have been clothed, were clothed ja had been clothed: ratkaisevaa on passiivi, ei aikamuoto.
3. Omistusta ilmaistaan henkilönnimen genetiivillä Brigham Young’s wives (’s-genetiivi, ei artikkelia) tai of-rakenteella the wives of Brigham Young. YTL hyväksyi myös muodon the wives of Brigham Young’s. Monikollinen wives tarvitaan, koska one of edellyttää monikkoa.
4. Vuoriston nimi on monikollinen erisnimi, ja sen edellä käytetään määräistä artikkelia: the Rocky Mountains tai lyhyesti the Rockies. Ilman artikkelia (Rocky Mountains) vastaus on väärin.
5. Puhuja on kertomisen kohde, joten tarvitaan passiivi: was told ('minulle kerrottiin'). Kertomus on menneessä ajassa, joten imperfekti on luontevin. YTL hyväksyi myös muodot have been told, had been told ja got told.
6. Verbi lecture saa aiheen edelle prepositiota on (tai about): lecture on something = 'luennoida jostakin'.
7. Preposition (for) jälkeen verbi on -ing-muodossa. Koska tuomatta jättäminen tapahtui ennen moitetta, perfektin -ing-muoto having brought on tarkin, mutta myös bringing on oikein.
8. Ilmaus come across something tarkoittaa 'törmätä johonkin, löytää sattumalta', ja sanaan kuuluu partikkeli across. Harvinaisempi come upon merkitsee samaa.
9. Relatiivipronomini viittaa asiaan (bucket) ja tulee preposition in jälkeen. Preposition jälkeen käytetään muotoa which; that ei voi seurata prepositiota, ja who/whom viittaa ihmisiin.
10. Miehet olivat toiminnan kohde, joten tarvitaan passiivi. Pidätys tapahtui ennen puhujan saapumista (just before I went there) ja kerrotaan epäsuorassa esityksessä (I was informed that…), joten pluskvamperfektin passiivi had been seized on paras. Myös were seized on kieliopillisesti mahdollinen.
